Things to know about eye makeup

Unlike fire or the wheel, eye makeup may not rank among the most important discoveries in human history, but this creative invention of the ancient Egyptians is still extremely popular today. Historical eras can be identified by observing the specific colors, trends, and styles used to accentuate the eyes. Thanks to the artistry of many Instagrammers, Youtubers and celebrities, eye makeup has never been more popular and has become an integral part of many women’s daily makeup routine.

The history of eye beautification

The ancient Egyptians used products to beautify their eyes as early as 12,000 years ago. Kohl, or khol, was a substance made from lead, oxidized copper, ocher, ash, malachite, crushed antimony, burnt almonds, and chrysocolla. Not only was cabbage used to improve appearance, it also served as a cure for infections. Like many other Egyptian cosmetics, cabbage was also used for religious purposes. The aristocracy and eventually the rest of the populace used it to enhance their looks and become more godlike. Another type of eye beauty product was used in Mesopotamia around 5,000 years ago. There, women ground up semi-precious stones and used their sparkling dust to adorn their lips and eyes.

Fashion trends of the Romans and Greeks

After eye products came to Greece and Rome, they lost their religious meaning and were used only as beauty products. Luxurious and expensive eye shadows from distant kingdoms like Babylon and India were not available to the common people, only upper class women and men had the means to buy them. The Romans also created their own products with recipes that included herbs, crushed minerals, dried flowers, animal sources, and crystallized dyes from plants.

Fashion revolution in the 20th century

The modern version of eyeshadow was born in the early 20th century, during the fashion revolution of the 1920s. Back then, a chemist developed mineral ingredients that eliminated unwanted side effects of previous products, such as irritation. From that point on, eye shadow became an important part of global fashion and was sometimes used more, sometimes less, for a more natural look.

Make-up for the eyes – the offer is huge

There are numerous eye makeup products on the market today. They are used around the eye to enhance the look of the eyes and enhance their beauty.

Eyeliner Ingredients: Whether it’s a stick, liquid, or cream, all eyeliners contain the same basic types of ingredients: film formers, thickeners, and pigments. Film formers form a thin layer on the skin. Thickeners like waxes and clays help stabilize the eyeliner so it adheres to the eyelids. Pigments include iron oxides to make black and brown, ultramarine for blue, chromium oxide for green, and titanium dioxide for white. Contrary to popular belief, liquid liners can be the easiest to use and produce a clean line. Creams and gels require a brush. Pens tend to be more waxy than other liners and are more likely to smudge. But they can be more easily blended into the lash line for a natural effect.

Mascara Ingredients: Mascara ingredients typically include a carbon black or iron oxide pigment to darken the lashes, a polymer to form a film that coats the lashes, a preservative, and thickening waxes or oils such as lanolin, mineral oil, paraffin, petrolatum, castor oil , carnauba wax and candelilla wax. There are two basic forms of mascara, namely non-water products or water and oil emulsions. Compositions without water are usually waterproof and less prone to staining or chipping, but they can sometimes be difficult to remove. Emulsions are more lash-friendly but can chip or smear.

Eyeshadow Ingredients: The raw material for eyeshadow is a base filler. Cosmetic-grade talc or mica is a primary filler, but some formulas use kaolin clay. Binding agents are used to ensure the powder adheres to the skin. The most common binders are derivatives of zinc or magnesium. In addition to pigments, some manufacturers add silica, nylon, dimethicone, boron nitride (a ceramic material), or bismuth chloride oxide as a flow agent to help the powder glide over the eyelid more easily. A little preservative like glycol (a type of alcohol) or tocopherol (a form of vitamin E) will help prevent bacterial growth. The big difference between a cream and a powder eyeshadow is the waxes and oils used in the base. Beeswax, castor oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, and silicone are among the ingredients used to liquefy a standard eyeshadow. Once the wax or oil dries, the pigments tend to last longer as the ingredients bind to the skin.

Eyebrow Pencil Ingredients: Eyebrow pencil is a product that applies color to the eyebrows. It is used to fill in and define the eyebrows. The eyebrow pencil contains special ingredients that place the color where it is needed with precision and control. The products have been specially developed to ensure that potentially harmful microorganisms cannot grow and multiply. Some of the most common ingredients are dimethicone, glycerin, talc, ozokerite, and color additives.
Tips for safe use

Only cosmetics intended for use around the eyes should be used. Products containing untested or harsh chemicals must be avoided at all costs.
Discard eye makeup after three months and use new products. Infektionserregende Bakterien wachsen leicht in cremigem oder flüssigem Make-up.
If you get an eye infection, throw away all makeup immediately and don’t use any makeup until the infection is gone.
Never share eye makeup, even with family or close friends.
When sampling in stores, use only fresh applicators and samples that have not been contaminated by multiple users.
Especially people who are prone to allergic reactions should only try one new make-up or skin care product at a time until you see if there is a reaction to the product.
Before applying, make sure your face and eyelids are clean.
Always apply make-up outside the lash line to avoid blocking the oil glands of the upper or lower eyelid. These glands secrete oil that protects the surface of the eye.
If eyelashes are clumped with mascara or any other product, do not use sharp objects to separate them. In this way, the eye can easily be injured.
At night before bed remove all eye makeup, especially mascara that can get stuck to the lashes
